Sport and Our Field
We are very lucky to have a large field right next to the school. The children treasure the field, which is used all year round, come rain or shine, for everything from PE lessons and clubs to playtimes and PTA events.
The children are never happier than when playing on the field during their lunchtimes, exploring the hedgerows or building dens, running around or playing football, bartering with sticks and berries or making pots.
At St Matthew's the children take part in lots of various sporting activities. These include Tennis, Football, Athletics, Cricket, Rounders, Rugby, Netball, Hockey and Table Tennis.
The older children have the opportunity to take part in house activities as well as Inter District and Borough Competitions run by The Merton School Sports Partnership . We are very fortunate to have Mr O'Doherty (Paddy) who is a retired sports teacher.
Sports Day at St Matthew's is a house event whereby in the morning all children from Reception upwards take part in activities in teams that include children from each year group to gain house points. This includes skipping, bean bag balancing , dribbling a ball and other fun activities. Then in the afternoon the Key Stage 2 children take part in actual running races. At the end of the day the points from the morning and afternoon are added up and the house with the most points wins the Cup.
In year 5 the children are trained by Merton Schools Sports Partnership to be Sports Leaders. During the Summer Term they run a Friday Lunchtime Sports club called 'Fun Fit Fridays.' The club is for children in Years One and Two and the Year 5 Sports leaders work very hard; coming up with activities, setting them up and running them on the day!
